The Department is responsible for the research and teaching of a broad range of areas related to computers and computing. We open up the world of computing for those who wish to become familiar and comfortable with computers in their daily working life but we also teach a challenging program of papers for those who wish to become computer professionals.

Computer Science is the study of computing. This includes the engineering aspects of the design of complex systems, fundamental theories of computer science, and techniques and tools used in a range of applications. As society's dependence on the reliability and correctness of computer-based systems increases, so does the need for experts to design and build the systems.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland is the largest such department in the country. As a result, we offer a very broad range of courses spanning almost all aspects of Computer Science. The Department has a strong research focus, with more than 40 academic staff actively undertaking research, much of it in collaboration with industry.
